Many mattress companies claim that their products can actually regulate body temperature. They boast about cooling covers, gel infusions, and many other features that don’t really affect the temperature of the mattress.
That is not the case with the Eight Sleep Pod Pro mattress; this high-tech mattress is all about temperature regulation and promises to actually cool and warm people as they sleep. So, how exactly does it work? Read our unbiased Eight Sleep Pod Pro mattress review to find out!
Eight Sleep Pod Pro Mattress Overview
The Eight Sleep Pod Pro is unlike any mattress we have tried before. True, it is an all-foam bed in a box mattress, and that is hardly new. However, its super high-tech temperature-regulating technology really sets it apart – it features an actual computer and water pump that, together with an Active Grid cover, keeps the mattress at the ideal temperature.
There is a lot to love about the Eight Sleep Pod Pro, but it is going to be a better fit for certain types of sleepers.

Eight Sleep Pod Pro Mattress Firmness And Feel
So, the Pod Pro might boast some serious technology, but it is still a mattress! Let’s take a look at how firm the mattress is and exactly what it feels like to lie down on it.
How Firm Is The Eight Sleep Pod Pro?
In our experience, the Eight Sleep Pod Pro felt like a 6.5/10 and is about medium in terms of firmness. This is an all-foam mattress that does have some give to it, and we sink in just a bit. Also, as we will discuss below, the Eight Sleep Pod Pro might feel firmer or softer depending on the weight of the sleeper.
Sleeping On The Eight Sleep Pod Pro
Ignoring the cooling and warming features of the Eight Sleep Pod Pro, let’s talk about how the mattress feels in different sleeping positions.
Back sleeping, we do get a good balance of comfort and support from the Pod Pro. Our hips are allowed to sink in just a bit, and we feel great overall support. Make sure to check out our best mattresses for back sleepers.
Side sleeping, the Pod Pro is offering us decent pressure relief, and we do not feel extreme firmness on our shoulders and hips. Stomach sleeping, the mattress is just a tad too soft for us, and we can feel our hips bowing into the mattress.
What Does The Eight Sleep Pod Pro Feel Like?
The Eight Sleep Pod Pro is an all-foam mattress with a good amount of response, and we don’t have any real issues moving around on the mattress. The Active Grid does give the top of the mattress a bit of that gel-like feel we find with mattresses like the Purple – it isn’t uncomfortable, but it is unique.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs
Average weight sleepers should find the Eight Sleep Pod Pro to be a good match for both back sleeping and side sleeping. If they are closer to 130 lbs, they could get enough support for stomach sleeping but, if they are closer to 230 lbs, they might need something firmer.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs
People who aren’t too much heavier than 230 lbs could get enough support when they are back sleeping on the Pod Pro. Those who are much heavier will probably need a mattress with coils. Also, heavyweight side sleepers are going to want a mattress with a thicker comfort layer, and heavyweight stomach sleepers will need a firmer mattress overall.
See our list of the best mattress for heavy people for some more supportive options.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs
Lightweight people should find the Pod Pro to be a good match for all three sleeping positions. They should get enough comfort and support for back sleeping, side sleeping, and stomach sleeping.
Eight Sleep Pod Pro Mattress Construction
Now, let’s see exactly what is inside the high-tech Eight Sleep Pod Pro mattress :
Cover
The Eight Sleep features an Active Grid cover that zips onto the top of the mattress. It contains tubing that will hold water to warm or cool the mattress – it also contains Comfort Blend foam to add some more softness and pressure relief to the top of the mattress.
Comfort Layers
The Eight Sleep Pod Pro contains three comfort layers. The first layer is Airflow foam – this is soft, bouncy, and responsive; below that, there is a layer of Supportive Air Technology that is meant to add some nice pressure relief; finally, there is a Flexspring Technology Core which will add some support and bounce to the top of the mattress.
Support Layer
In the Eight Sleep Pod Pro, the comfort layers rest on a layer of durable, premium base foam.
Mattress Height
The Eight Sleep Pod Pro mattress is 12″ tall, which is pretty standard for an all-foam mattress.
Using The Eight Sleep Pod Pro
The Eight Sleep Pod Pro is no ordinary mattress, so we can’t just review it as such! We’d also like to explain the setup process, how the mattress works, and what it feels like to use it.
Setting Up The Eight Sleep Pod Pro
The Eight Sleep Pod Pro will be delivered in a total of three boxes – this is about two more than what you get with another bed in a box mattress!
The company suggests that people begin by unboxing the actual mattress (Basically, take out the rolled-up mattress and place it on the bed frame or foundation). Then, carefully cut through the plastic layers without damaging the mattress, and clear away all the packing materials.
Then, open the box that contains the Active Grid cover (this zips onto the top of the mattress quite easily). Then, open up the box that contains the Hub and plug that into the wall – the tubes from the Active Grid will plug into the back of the hub.
Finally, use the app to complete the setup – this will include pouring water into the hub and priming the mattress for use.
How The Eight Sleep Pod Pro Works
All the magic of the Eight Sleep Pod Pro can be found in the Hub and Active Grid; the Hub warms or cools the water in its chamber and pumps that into the Active Grid cover. There are a number of tubes that run throughout the Active Grid and, as the cooler or warmer water enters it, this will cool or warm the mattress.
Sleepers can set how warm or cool they want the mattress to be through the Eight Sleep Pod Pro; we found it very easy to use and had no trouble setting our preferences. Both sides can also be customized so that sleeping partners can each be as warm as cool as they like on their side.
The Active Grid and Hub will also track heart rate, breathing, and sleep cycles during the night. There is also an alarm feature that will warm and vibrate the top of the mattress to softly wake sleepers.
What Does It Feel Like To Use The Eight Sleep Pod Pro?
We tested out the Pod Pro technology using the manual settings on the app. First off, we put the mattress to its coldest setting (55 degrees) – it does take quite a while for the mattress to completely cool but, once that is done, it is honestly very cold. We would say it is similar to lying on an ice pack with a towel wrapped around it, and we can feel the mattress really bring our temperature down.
Then, we took the mattress up to its hottest setting (110 degrees) – this also took some time, but it did make the mattress feel extremely warm – it was similar to lying on a heating pad or electric blanket.
All told, the Eight Sleep Pod Pro does what it says it will do and both warms and cools the sleeping surface of the mattress. It really is one of the best customizable mattresses.

Eight Sleep Pod Pro Mattress Performance
We also ran the Eight Sleep Pod Pro through a number of tests to see how it performs with regard to motion transfer, edge support, and durability.
Sleeping Hot Or Cold
Temperature regulation is the real highlight of the Eight Sleep Pod Pro. Its Active Grid and Hub allow sleepers to find the perfect sleep temperature for them (Read above for exactly how this works and what it feels like).
Motion Transfer
The Pod Pro is a bouncier mattress that features some responsive foams; mattresses with slower-moving foams are usually better at cutting down on motion transfer, but responsive foams like the ones found in the Pod Pro are not. So, it is not surprising that the Pod Pro isn’t handling it well, and we are seeing some transfer across the mattress.
Edge Support
Given that it is an all-foam mattress that is not extremely thick, the Pod Pro does not feature the best edge support. We feel secure enough sitting near the edge of the mattress but, when we are lying down, the edge does collapse under our weight; we feel a bit like we might roll off the mattress.
Durability
The Eight Sleep is indeed a high-tech, luxury mattress; looking at its high-density foams and overall quality construction, we see it lasting for at least 7-10 years.
Off-gassing
The mattress itself is an all-foam mattress that comes in a box. So, there is going to be some initial off-gassing after opening the box and unwrapping the mattress – this is totally normal, and the smell will disappear within 48 hours.
Noise
Moving around on the Eight Sleep Pod Pro, we aren’t hearing a significant amount of noise. The Active Grid cover does crinkle a bit when we shift positions, however.
Sex
Those who need the best mattress for sex usually want to find something more responsive. The Eight Sleep is indeed a bouncier mattress and should make it easy for sexual partners to move around.
Warranty Info
The Eight Sleep Pod Pro mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty on the foam portion of the mattress. However, the technology layer of the Eight Sleep Pod Pro is limited to a 2-year warranty.
